Tunisia reveals their entry

Tunis, Tunisia - July 11, 1935CET

As promised, the time has come for Wataniya 1 to reveal who will represent Tunisia in the next edition of the North Vision Song Contest, as well as the song they will perform.

On June 30, along with Tunisia's confirmation, the Tunisian broadcaster also shed some light on the style and genre the entry will be in. The broadcaster stated that the entry would be vastly more modern than the previous one, and that this entry would be much more accessible to the fanbase, evoking dance-pop and contemporary R&B.

So... who exactly will be performing the Tunisian entry? It's none other than...

AMAL CHERIF

Amal Cherif was a successful contestant in 2019's The Voice Arab, in a year on the pan-Arab music contest where Tunisians really came through (the winner, not Cherif, was Tunisian too). In December 2019, she released her first single since her strong run on The Voice ended, and it couldn't be more different from the typical Arabic pop today.

Her entry also goes against the grain of the male-dominated ethos of the Arabic music industry as well. It has been described by multiple publications as an anthem for women; the song itself is about a woman reclaiming joy in her life after breaking up from her former boyfriend.

A refreshing pop tune to the Arab world for sure, but also a switch-up from the sombre Ayem which was sent last edition. The contrast couldn't be more obvious! Below, you can listen to the Tunisian entry which will go through the PQR, and hopefully progress to the semi-finals in Georgia.

Polish delegation decided to be the part of NVSC #33. It's most likely that the

Polish act will be chosen internally but everything might change. We are happy to compete in the semifinals and will do our best to qualify for the final.

If we except Egypt - a country that doesn't compete anymore - Latvia is now the last country in the ranking of Nations. How did you react when you discovered this?

That was not a surprise. If you look at the Latvian results, you can see that no other country has been waiting for a place in final for as long as us. Last time we reached the final was in edition #24 and almost nobody remembers what song it was. Like other countries, but worse than them, we are stuck to an infernal "failed to qualify/bottom five - failed to qualify from PQR/withdraw" cycle. We can even see that in the entire Latvian story, the country never reached the semi-finals after a bottom five.

How do you explain these continuously bad results?

Well, there are three main reasons. The first one is that people don't only vote for the songs they like the most but also for countries. And Latvia is one of the least known - and therefore least liked - countries. Sometimes people are not even aware of this but they are simply more interested in the songs sent by popular countries and therefore are more likely to vote for them. The second reason is due to the fact that nowadays, the PQR has become an absolute bloodbath every single edition. Only two spots for nine or ten countries is just absurd, and countries like Latvia have almost no chance to go through, especially if we consider that there are always big countries that manage to fail in semi-final every edition and become logical favourites for the PQR the next edition. A system with 14 countries in PQR for 6 spots or 16 countries for 8 spots would be far better for a country like us but we don't decide the rules. And the third reason is that with bad results like these, we even struggle finding artists who accept to represent Latvia in NVSC. Some of them prefer to compete in other contests like Eurovision or Nordisk Melodi Grand Prix - and we must respect their choice - and we even heard an artist saying that she considered herself as "too famous" for representing Latvia and who prefered to participate to national selections for another country...

Ouch! That must hurt... How do you intend to break that "infernal cycle"?

We tried to organise national selections in order to put more light on us, even if for a country like Latvia, this kind of event is very expensive. We thought that we could receive more incomes from sponsors if we managed to reach the final of NVSC again. That strategy almost led us to bankruptcy. The summum of the crisis was reached during the 31st edition. We had a clear winner of our selection, which got unexpectedly bashed during the betting odds, at a point that it got one of the worst betting odds of the history of the contest, and there was nothing more to be done. Most of our sponsors ran away even before the edition started and we still didn't finish to pay the bills for that event. So now, our policy is completely different. First of all, Nordisk Melodi Grand Prix has become a cheaper but effective way of promoting Latvian music, with the advantage that we can take risks there without missing the next edition. Dina Kina came out of nowhere there and almost won the contest and beat all the big nordic countries. This is the kind of result that may people think that Latvia has potential even in NVSC. But the most important point is that we won't send artists just in order to participate. We must be convinced that they have reasonable chances to qualify or we will just feed the idea that Latvia is the weakest country of the contest. That's why we withdrew last edition. So until new investors come into Latvia and take the delegation in charge, we'll analyse the situation each edition and decide if that it's worth participating and spending resources for this. We also decided that there won't be any regular national selections again. We'll choose our songs internally or publish at most three songs on our website and let people vote for their favourite.
