Season 9 - Episode 1 Подоляночка (Get Up) by alyona alyona & Jerry Heil
After a long while of consideration, I have decided to choose this song due to personal reasons and the meaning of the song.
First of all, the meaning. When I think about rising from the ashes and redemption, I think about self-encouragement and energy. The tone and the "just get up, get up" being repeated over and over is proof of that. Even if you don't speak Ukrainian, this song is like an anthem, a universal song.
Entering the meaning of the lyrics. I learned that 'Podolyanochka' refers to a girl from Podolia, a historical region in Ukraine, and it is also a traditional Ukrainian folk song. The folk song is simple. It's about a girl who fell to the ground and encourages that girl to wash her face and get up. And somehow alyona alyona & Jerry Heil work their modern magic to elevate that meaning even more.
Imagine you're at the lowest point, when you cried all of your tears and mercury falling down instead, and a painful shard in my heart. You finally have courage to remove the shard. It hurts so much. There is a wound, but from that wound, despair, fear, anger, ... will flow out of that. The wound will ache and will hurt today, but the wound will close and healed. Then you follow the voice, the light out of the depth and back to the ground, where you begin again. You felt weak, but you tell yourself "Get up. No need to pretend anymore. Wake up. It will be better. I am strong."
The song has been personally one of my favorite to encourage myself out of the recent situations I faced recently. It also reflects me so much on my journey to start again on working on myself after so many attempts. And of course, a gym favorite of mine.
~Kuchi-san~ | LYRICS
TRANSLATION
In the deepest depths of fate Mercury rolls down instead of tears Take out the painful shard Let yesterday's anger flow from the wound Let it hurt a little more today, tomorrow a new day will heal everything We will emerge together from the abyss A beacon of light will guide us to the ground
Let your world break and the light of the fire fade Let the kilowatts flow through your body Crying is a way out because it's worth living on You will fill yourself when you give And then there will be warm and sunny days Even if snow falls from the sky Let the thunderous snakes crawl around your feet You can say no to temptation You have so much strength Unconditional beauty Carry your warmth to the world Starting tomorrow.

Miz Bulge Area Season 9 - Episode 1 "Risen from the Ashes"
"Reborn" Rae Morris
For the first ever episode of the brand new season of SCF's Song Race, I have chosen to go with "Reborn" by Rae Morris. Released in 2017, off of her second studio album "Someone Out There", the song "Reborn" encapsulate a journey of self-discovery and rebirth. The song lyrics narrate the experience of significant life changes, whether by overcoming hardships, embarking on new ventures, or simply evolving as individuals and discovering our own path in life.
The lyrics can also be interpreted through the lens of a queer person. For example, the lines I am reborn / Find another name for me, finally transform me express the themes of identity, rebirth, and self-discovery central to the transgender experience. The lines Have they found a cure for me? / Have they found a cure for me yet? alludes to the experience of being gay, particularly in the context of societal attitudes and historical attempts to "cure" homosexuality.
We shed Love then grew Grew apart But I never knew The harm That you were doing To me All along Our love's not red, it's nothing
Give up and start from now Nothing can hurt or harm me now I am reborn (Find another name for me, find another name for me) I am reborn (Find another name for me, finally transform me, yeah)
These are New beginnings Won't let The past determine Where I Go from here My ghosts have turned to nothing
Give up and start from now Nothing can hurt or harm me now I am reborn (Find another name for me, find another name for me) I am reborn (Find another name for me, finally transform me, yeah)
Have they found a cure for me? Have they found a cure for me yet? Have they found a cure for me? Have they found a cure for me yet? Have they found a cure for me? Have they found a cure for me yet? My heart returns to nothing
Give up and start from now Nothing can hurt or harm me now I am reborn (Find another name for me, find another name for me) I am reborn (Find another name for me, finally transform me, yeah) |

MEL A TONIN S9 E1: Risen From The Ashes Song: Dog Days Are Over Artist: Florence + The Machine
For this first episode, I have chosen "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine. This song is all about the overcoming of previous darkness and finding new happiness and taking it forward into the future and celebrating that fact.
The opening lines, "Happiness hit her like a train on a track," suggest an unexpected and overwhelming surge of joy, marking a stark contrast to the past struggles implied by the phrase "dog days." This sudden shift indicates a pivotal moment of change, where the protagonist is thrust from a state of gloom into one of elation. The imagery of running and escaping, prevalent throughout the song, further leans into this transition. Lines such as "Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father / Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers" evoke a sense of urgency and liberation, pushing the listener to leave behind the burdens of the past and move forward with newfound energy and purpose.
The recurring chorus, "The dog days are over / The dog days are done," serves as a mantra of release and redemption. It signifies the end of hardship and the arrival of a hopeful future. The use of vibrant, dynamic language throughout the song creates a feeling of motion and progress, reinforcing the theme of new beginnings. The happy instrumentation, with its energetic beat and soaring vocals, mirror the lyrical content, enhancing the overall message of new beginnings.
Lyrics: Happiness hit her like a train on a track Coming towards her, stuck still, no turning back She hid around corners and she hid under beds She killed it with kisses and from it she fled With every bubble, she sank with a drink And washed it away down the kitchen sink
[Pre-Chorus] The dog days are over The dog days are done The horses are coming So you better run
[Chorus] Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers Leave all your love and your longing behind You can't carry it with you if you want to survive The dog days are over The dog days are done Can you hear the horses? 'Cause here they come
[Bridge] And I never wanted anything from you Except everything you had And what was left after that too, oh
[Verse 2] Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back Struck from a great height By someone who should have known better than that
[Pre-Chorus] The dog days are over The dog days are done Can you hear the horses? 'Cause here they come
[Chorus] Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers Leave all your love and your longing behind You can't carry it with you if you want to survive The dog days are over The dog days are done Can you hear the horses? 'Cause here they come
[Outro] The dog days are over The dog days are done (Here they come) The horses are coming So you better run (Here they come) The dog days are over The dog days are done (Here they come) The horses are coming So you better run

DEE ABLAH
RISEN FROM THE ASHES
Send a song about a new beggining.
SUPERPODER - MARIA JOSE LLERGO
For me a new beginning it's very linked to overcoming the past and transfromation, which it's what this song talks about. Throughout the song, Maria Jose Llergo talks about how from growing up poor and sick with the strenght of her family and a lot of perseverance , she was able to reach her dreams and leave in the past all this bad stuff. She says I learnt to sing from crying, i learnt to cry from singing. Which it's important that a new beginning not always mean a Tabula Rasa, clean start, but transformating your mentality and spirit to new ways and overcoming past but never forgetting what got you to the new heights.
Lyrics:
It took me years and millennia to understand
That I can be a bullfighter, sword and a bull at the same time
Now I can see it, now I can see it
Pure like water, heart of a fish
Kissed by the sun, with dark skin
Mom cries at night, doesn't know what to do
Another paper has arrived in the mailbox
There's nothing to pay with, nothing to eat
"That girl is broken, she feels too much"
Whisper the neighbors throughout the neighborhood
Life passes, years
Now I fly around the world, live on stages
"That girl is broken, she feels too much"
Whisper the neighbors throughout the neighborhood
Life passes, years go by
Now I fly around the world, live on stages
I learned to cry while singing
I learned to sing while crying
Together we are changing
The ugliness of this bad world
I learned to cry while singing
I learned to sing while crying
Together we are changing
The ugliness of this bad world
Superpower, superpower, superpower
(superpower, superpower)
Superpower, superpower, superpower
The zeros in my account are not inherited
I earned them alone, singing
I'm like the poppy, dark and red
I don't need anyone, I take care of myself
Dad smiles at me as if nothing is wrong
Even though everything is about to explode
While his girl goes from hospital to hospital
She never lacked what can't be bought
In case they told you that you couldn't
Because of money and its tyranny
For the working-class neighborhoods, for my Malvinas
You can be whatever you want, blessed be your life
In case they told you that you couldn't
Because of money and its tyranny
For the working-class neighborhoods, for my Malvinas
You can be whatever you want, blessed be your life
I learned to cry while singing
I learned to sing while crying
Together we are changing
The ugliness of this bad world
Together we are changing
The ugliness of this bad world

LADY WESTMINSTER - EPISODE 1
Vicky Sampson African Dream
For the first challenge I have selected South African singer Vicky Sampson and her song "African Dream". The theme for this week is new beginnings and since it is Pride Month and the Euros at the moment, politics was very present for me and so I decided to go into a more political direction with my entry. "African Dream", sung in both English and Zulu, was released in the year 1995, one year after the first free elections in South Africa when Nelson Mandela was elected South Africa's first black president, which marked the final end of Apartheid in Africa. The song gained international notoriety after Vicky Sampson performed it during the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, the second major sports event held in post-Apartheid Africa after the 1995 Rugby World Cup. I have chosen this song because it speaks to the new beginning of South Africa and its people after the end of Apartheid and all the emotions that come along with Apartheid finally coming to an end in South Africa and Namibia. The most poignant lyrics for me are at the beginning of the chorus: "'Cause in my African dream, there's a new tomorrow / My African dream, is dream that we can follow"
The black population of South Africa was finally able to live in freedom and peace, living their "African dream", the new beginning for them being both a dream that has come to reality and a dream that they are finally able to live. The song captures perfectly the joy felt after the end of Apartheid but also the uncertainty that came with it and the darkness of the past still looming in the minds of many people in South Africa and Namibia. - Lyrics - Sometimes alone in the evening
I look outside my window
At the shadows in the night
I hear the sound of distant crying
The darkness multiplying
And weary hearts denied
All I feel is my heart beat
Beating like a drum, beating with confusion
All I hear are the voices, telling me to go
But I could never run
'Cause in my African dream, there's a new tomorrow
My African dream, is dream that we can follow
Now when the night begins to fall
I listen for your call, I listen for you heartbeat
Alone my dream is just a dream
Another false illusion, a shadow in the night
All I want is for our hearts to be beating just as one
To silence the confusion
Then the pain and the illusion will disappear again
And we will never run
'Cause in my African dream, there's a new tomorrow
My African dream is a dream that we can follow
And though it would seem my hope's an illusion
My African dream is an end to the confusion
Mawetbu we Afrika (This is my African dream)

season 9 episode 1risen from the ashes
"Gleymmérei" (e. forget-me-not) - Halldór Eldjárn & GDRN
i wanted to go for flowers this week, because flowers bloom every spring, hence the constant rebirth, new beginning etc. i think a forget-me-not is a really good flower when it comes to the theme of new beginnings, as it sticks to you! dont forget it, remember the past but still bloom or something etc etc i guess here is my translation of the lyrics, you will see the vision mwahh
Through the sea I sense a magnetic field. Unclear memories of what is and was
From inside a dark cell a light turns on picture of picture of words under a rose. The day is what tomorrow was I see you there, I see you there.
Written in the skies a message. Loud and clear mental break.
Appears in grass forget-me-not. Sleeps and dreams of the south.
No sense of direction endless magnetic fields induced moments a moment beginning.
Forget-me-not.

TESS TPUSI Season 9, Episode 1: Risen From the Ashes
How do we know when something new has begun? Do we find it immediately and acknowledge that our lives have been permanently altered? More often than not, no. Looking back at these moments that have shaped us, we can pinpoint when these things changed. In the moment, not so much. I wanted to capture this dichotomy surrounding new beginnings, and here we are.
"Dream State (Brighter Night)" begins by looking at the start of a relationship, taking photographs of everything that could be seen. This young couple feels invincible, like nothing bad could ever happen to them. As time goes on, you grow, both as a person and in the relationship. Wiser, you can set on a new path, one where you can accurately look back at what happened, and know how to improve yourself. The song captures this at the very end, as you aren't taking photos of what all you can see, but rather what you can be. Growing up, there are so many lessons that you don't learn until it is thrust right at you. And that to me, is what new beginnings are all about: growth and adaptability.
Son Lux - Dream State (Brighter Night)

LyricsDays we were young We took photographs of everything we could see We knew we were Impervious no matter how we'd bleed We never fought for breath Priest and prophetess We were nothing we would defy
Invincible skin It's how we all begin
Awake, awake This is a dream state Though we were wide awake This is a dream state Though we were wide awake This is a dream state
Will we survive in this, our new wilderness? We have nothing on our feet We had to run from it Priest and prophetess We were nothing we would deny
Invisible skin Where is the world within? Invincible skin It's how we all begin
Awake, awake This is a dream state This is a dream state Though we are wide awake
Out of the dark day, into the brighter night Out of the dark day, into the brighter night Out of the dark day, into the brighter night Out of the dark day, into the brighter night Out of the dark day, into the brighter night
How do we feel? How do we feel in that photograph And how do we feel it again? How do we feel? How do we feel in that photograph And how do we feel it again?
Days we were young We took photographs of everything we could be

Phaedra Phoenix Season 9: Episode 1 - Risen from the Ashes
TW / Mention of death
I have decided to the explore the darker side of concept "new beginning(s)", more specifically looking at the idea of loss and grievance as a 'new beginning'. Dealing with grief is a challenging and overwhelming experience for a lot of people, due to their loved one not being there anymore, consequently being a 'new beginning'.
For this theme, I have chosen the emotional heartfelt indie song "Robbed" performed by the British-Zimbabwean singer Rachel Chinouriri, which discusses her dealing with the grief of tragically losing her niece and cousin. She performed this song when I saw and met her last month and she performed this so poignantly and with raw emotion. Despite never meeting her niece, the song reinforces the idea of strong family bond, where losing this bond marked a new beginning for the singer. The song normalises the concept of grief, presenting its okay to feel robbed over losing a loved one and the normalises the fact grief is one of the 'new beginnings' in the journey of life.
Lyrics:
Absence brought us closer than you realized Yesterday, we strayed from parallel lives Blank silhouettes of you In memories that don't exist Words of a story shouldn't hurt like this We were perfect strangers, one life torn in two You were robbed of summer, I was robbed of you Nothing lasts forever, but you were gone too soon You were robbed of summer I was robbed of you (Hm-mm, mm) and I was robbed of you Unfamiliar face I should've recognized Cards that we got dealt were two of different kinds Blank silhouettes of you In memories that don't exist Words of a story shouldn't hurt like this We were perfect strangers, one life torn in two You were robbed of summer, I was robbed of you Nothing lasts forever, but you were gone too soon You were robbed of summer I was robbed of you, mm-mm, mm I was robbed of you, yeah And I was robbed of you And I was robbed of you I was robbed of you (mm, mm-mm) We were perfect strangers, one life torn in two Sad to say goodbye before I said hello to you Nothing lasts forever, but you were gone too soon You were robbed of summer, I was robbed of you
