Welcome to the 90th edition of Retro WWW Song Contest! S P E C I A L E D I T I O N The theme for this special edition is the National genre/Traditional song, which means that every country must send a song that fits to that theme. Here is some information that could help you find your entry. Historical characteristics of Traditional Folk Music: • It was transmitted through an oral tradition. • It is often related to national culture. • They commemorate historical or personal events. • The songs have been performed, by custom, over a long period, usually several generations. • There is no copyright on the songs because most of them originate from the 19th century and are much less frequent nowadays. • Fusion of cultures; cultures interact and change over time. They may incorporate influences from disparate cultures. I am sure everyone knows more bout their folk/national/traditional music than I do. You can look up more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_musicTo mention some genres that would fit this theme: folk, turbo-folk, folk-rock, folk metal, polka, waltz, kolo, native American music, ethno, samba, salsa, indigenous music, Celtic, regional, choir music, country, gospel, flamenco, and many more as applied to each individual country. The English language doesn’t differentiate between types of folk music. For example, Slovenia has “ naradonozabavna glasba” also known as volksmusik, as well as “ ljudska glasba” which could be translated to either folk or traditional music. In English, both are called folk. Not to mention folk is different in each country. I'm looking for either: - A song in a national genre (some genres listed above)
- A song with a traditional context (it can originate from the previous centuries - melody, lyrics or both; you can send a modern version of it)
Names on the imageWhen it comes to traditional music, original songwriters lived around the 19th century. This means that the original artist probably did not record a version, and the only versions of the song you can find are by other people. In this case, you can either give credit to the original artist, the artist you are actually sending, or give a shoutout to the original artist (just make sure that is written clearly on your post). The latter would just have Artist and Title on the picture with the shoutout written somewhere else. Read more here Post your entries here in the thread, including the time slot (24 seconds long) you want to use in the recap and a picture of your artist(s).
Confirmations do not count!
Submission deadline is on the 6th of May or until we reach the limit of 30 participants. (there is no limit in Special Editions). If there are more than 31 participants, there will be semi-finals.
If something is unclear have a look at the rules or message me. Germany
Timeslot: 0:00+
I'm not sure whether this song is eligible, since it doesn't originate from the 19th century (at least not to my knowledge), but it's the song that came first to my mind when the theme was revealed, as I'd classify the genre as folk.

Cypriot entry revealed! The Cypriot entry is going to be the demotic song "Oloaspron pezouni", a song in the Greek Cypriot dialect.By the term 'demotic' (='δημοτικό' coming from the Ancient Greek word 'δήμος' which means 'people') we refer to the so-called "songs of the people", which were basically songs that never really had an official artist - in fact they were just sung by people of the country. I am unsure about the actual year the song originates from but the only studio version I could find of it comes from 2003, back when it was recorded by our Kyriakou Pelagia. Kyriakou Pelagia - 'Oloaspron pezouni' (='All white dove')

Since most of my entries tend to be in English or Swiss German, I thought I should possibly go for one of the other languages - also because I hardly ever used them. I was lucky enough to find something in all 3 of them as well as in respective dialects, but not on youtube (or only in questionable quality). Also the only good quality version of one song in Italian ofc had to be sang by someone from Italy.
My next entry is going to be a so-called Kuhreihen (according to the English wikipedia it's also the official English name of that kind of track). These are very special traditional chants because in earlier centuries they were sang by the shepherds in the mountains to call the cattle to "come home" (something like that.). The first mention dates all the way back to the 16h century.
The one I'm giving to you, simply called Le ranz des vaches, is considered the most famous one within the whole country. Hailing from the exact same region as the Gruyere cheese it's mainly sang in the French-speaking part (the canton of Fribourg to be precise). And ofc the interpretation that I'm going to use here is by someone from right there and it also happens to be the most famous one. Bernard Romanens - Le ranz des vaches
As for the timeslot I'm not sure whether I want to hear him alone or the choir because both are exactly 0:24 seconds ... BernardBernard was only 30 years old at this. He was unfortunately found dead in 1984 to circumstances that are still not fully solved ... This "performance" of his was at the 1977 Fête des Vignerons in Vevey (near Lausanne). For everyone interested in what it's about this is the link to its article on Wikipedia in English. It's held only every 20 years the last time being in 2019. For everyone who wants to see this is Le ranz du caches in 2019. There are also several other interpretations of it including one by Bastian Baker in 2013. Fun fact: Since this is basically the representation of Fribourg and the local Ice hockey club is present in the Swiss national Ice hockey league it's kind of become a club anthem and is sang by the fans after every win as I just read a few minutes ago! Hope you're enjoying this entry of mine.

I guess this is what we could've expected from you. Why would it go wrong for you? This is very likely to win - I don't see the "wrong" in that...

I guess this is what we could've expected from you. Why would it go wrong for you? This is very likely to win - I don't see the "wrong" in that... Don't just usually trust these kind of songs mostly just because i am not familiar on how this style can do and because the style is outside of what i tend to listen to as well. But i guess we will see Edit: eh i just decided to change for this very reason
